Sevilla is facing a significant rebuilding task in its goalkeeping department for the next season. The club has been heavily impacted by defensive frailties this past season, conceding 60 goals and managing only six clean sheets, a situation that necessitates a complete overhaul of the position, especially given the impending departures of their current first-choice goalkeepers.

Goalkeeper Departures

The club’s primary goalkeeper, Odysseas Vlachodimos, despite being nominated as one of the league’s best, is likely to leave. His parent club, Newcastle, has set high financial demands that clash with Sevilla’s current economic situation. Vlachodimos himself has expressed a desire to stay but the transfer fee is a major hurdle.

Adding to the challenge, Orjan Nyland’s contract expires on June 30, 2026, and he has already bid farewell to the club. This leaves Sevilla without their two main goalkeepers, creating an urgent need for restructuring in a crucial area of the team.

Navigating Financial Uncertainty

The club’s planning for the next season is further complicated by the ongoing process of its sale. The sporting management, currently led by José Ignacio Navarro, must proceed with caution. Despite institutional uncertainty and limited room for maneuver, immediate action is required.

Antonio Cordón, who is set to leave his role as Director of Football on May 31, has been actively working on market operations. One of his recent initiatives was to identify Diego Conde as a potential candidate to fill one of the goalkeeping vacancies.

Potential New Signings

Diego Conde, previously linked with Sevilla in 2024 after his performances with Leganés, is now a target. Currently at Villarreal, he has played a secondary role behind Arnau Tenas and Luiz Júnior. At 27, Conde is seeking to revive his career, and Andalusia presents an attractive prospect for him and his family. Sevilla had an advantage in negotiations due to Cordón’s strong relationship with Villarreal, evident in the loan of Alfon. With Cordón’s departure, the club’s management is keen to re-engage and secure Conde, ideally on loan, though a low-cost permanent transfer is also a possibility. His acquisition would not require a substantial outlay and would help address the goalkeeping situation.

Other options on Sevilla’s radar include Julen Agirrezabala, a long-standing target who was considered before Vlachodimos’s signing. Agirrezabala, contracted with Athletic Club until June 2027, had an injury-plagued season on loan at Valencia. Valencia is not expected to exercise their purchase option, meaning Agirrezabala will return to Bilbao with limited prospects, which Sevilla could offer.

The club is also looking at younger talent. Hungarian goalkeeper Ármin Pécsi, currently with Liverpool’s reserve team, is on their list and could join Sevilla on loan. The 21-year-old is highly regarded by Liverpool for his potential. Additionally, the club is considering promoting Alberto Flores from Sevilla Atlético, who has shown the maturity to step up to the first team.

Coach’s Perspective

Regardless of the goalkeepers ultimately chosen, Sevilla acknowledges the need for meticulous planning. Coach Luis García Plaza has emphasized the financial constraints that limit their movement, especially with time running out. The high number of goals conceded last season, the close proximity to the relegation zone, and the risk of further austerity measures make careful decision-making paramount, particularly in the goalkeeper position.

The club’s ability to navigate these financial challenges and secure suitable replacements will significantly impact their performance in the upcoming season.
