The Guardia Civil is investigating a sophisticated banking scam that resulted in the fraudulent withdrawal of over €25,000 from a victim's account. The incident, which began with a seemingly official SMS message, highlights the increasing threat of advanced phishing tactics targeting bank customers. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and distrust unsolicited communications.

The case unfolded when a woman in Valencia discovered irregular charges on her bank account. Upon contacting a relative who managed the account, she learned that he had received an SMS message purportedly from their financial institution. The message warned of an unauthorized transaction of €15,000 and provided a phone number for immediate contact.

Bank Security Scam

When the relative called the provided number, he was connected with individuals who identified themselves as part of the bank's security department. These scammers employed a phone script that closely mimicked official bank communications and demonstrated knowledge of the SMS content and the purported transaction amount. This ruse successfully instilled confidence and bypassed the victim's suspicions.

Under the guise of blocking the fraudulent operation, the perpetrators requested the online banking credentials. Once in possession of this sensitive information, they proceeded to execute five unauthorized transfers, draining over €25,000 from the victim's account.

Investigation and Suspects

The complaint was processed through the ON-RED (National Electronic Complaint Reception Office), and the Guardia Civil's cybercrime unit initiated an investigation. Their efforts focused on analyzing communications with the alleged perpetrators and tracing the flow of the stolen funds. The investigation led to the identification of four individuals residing in the province of Cádiz as the suspected culprits. These individuals and the gathered evidence have been handed over to the competent judicial authority in Cádiz.

Preventing Future Frauds

In response to this and similar incidents, the Guardia Civil has issued crucial advice for the public to avoid falling victim to online scams:

Always be suspicious of SMS messages, especially those containing links. Avoid clicking on any links provided in unsolicited messages.

Exercise caution when purchasing items online. Stick to secure websites and be wary of overly attractive offers on unfamiliar platforms.

Do not accept unexpected job offers received through social media channels like Telegram, WhatsApp, or TikTok.

Be skeptical of any requests for money, regardless of the pretext, made via social media.

Contact your bank to activate enhanced authentication for all payments.

Immediately block your bank cards or payment methods if you suspect any unauthorized use.

Report any suspected criminal activity promptly, either through the Guardia Civil's electronic headquarters or by visiting a local unit.

It is also recommended to contact your bank to reclaim any undue charges and gather all relevant details about the transaction, such as the destination account, the merchant or entity involved, and any phone numbers associated with the transaction, particularly for services like Bizum.

The Guardia Civil emphasizes that reporting cybercrimes through their electronic headquarters allows for a swift and efficient response.
