Hundreds of pilgrims from the Rocío brotherhoods across the province of Córdoba have commenced their annual journey to the revered village of El Rocío. Accompanied by their respective *Simpecados* (banners of the Virgin), these devoted followers are demonstrating their profound faith and deep-rooted tradition in honor of the Virgen del Rocío. The pilgrimage, a blend of fervent hope, physical endurance, and spiritual dedication, sees brotherhoods from towns such as Priego de Córdoba, Puente Genil, Cabra, Lucena, and Montoro undertaking various stages of the arduous trek.

The Rocío pilgrimage is a significant cultural and religious event in Andalusia, drawing participants from all walks of life. For Football Español readers, particularly those with a connection to Spanish culture and regional traditions, this event highlights the rich tapestry of life beyond the football pitch. It showcases the passion and community spirit that are also hallmarks of local football clubs and their supporters.

The Priego de Córdoba Brotherhood's Path

The hermandad of Rocío de Priego de Córdoba began its journey on Sunday morning from the municipal fairgrounds, heading towards Estepa for its first overnight stop. On Monday, pilgrims made their way to La Puebla del Río for provisions, followed by the presentation of their *Simpecado* at the main church. Anticipation is high for their presentation in Villamanrique on Wednesday afternoon, an event expected to be attended by the Bishop of Córdoba, Jesús Fernández, alongside members from the Albasur center who will travel by bus to witness this significant moment.

The journey for the Priego brotherhood includes crossing the Quema and traversing the "Raya Real," a thirteen-kilometer stretch of challenging sandy terrain, obligatory for all *rocieros*. By Friday afternoon, they are expected to enter the village of El Rocío, with their official presentation before the "Blanca Paloma" (White Dove, a title for the Virgin) scheduled for 7:30 PM. This procession involves a convoy of fourteen carts and approximately 200 people, accompanied by around fifty horses.

Puente Genil and Cabra's Encounters with the Bishop

The Puente Genil brotherhood will also host Bishop Fernández at the Torre Abad estate in Utrera, where he will preside over a Eucharist today, Tuesday, May 19. Concelebrating the mass will be José Juan Jiménez Güeto, diocesan delegate of Brotherhoods of Córdoba; Antonio Budia, counselor of the brotherhood; and Antonio Tejero, parish priest of Santiago Apóstol de Lucena.

Meanwhile, the Rocío brotherhood of Cabra, which commenced its pilgrimage this past weekend, awaits Bishop Jesús Fernández on Wednesday, May 20. He will celebrate mass at the Palacio del Rey stop at 8:30 PM, joining forces with the Rocío brotherhood of Lucena for a moment of shared faith, fraternity, and Rociero communion.

Lucena and Montoro's Journeys

The Lucena brotherhood made a significant stop in Coria del Río on Sunday, where their *Simpecado* was ceremoniously disembarked into the waters of the Guadalquivir, an act imbued with faith, tradition, and brotherhood. Their journey continued steadfastly on Monday, reaching Cruz de Ponce, where pilgrims recuperated amidst laughter and shared experiences. "We continue to advance, step by step, with our hope intact and faith as our guide, drawing a little closer to that much-anticipated encounter with the Blanca Paloma," they expressed, summarizing their day.

The Montoro brotherhood, godchild of the Córdoba filial, recently celebrated its tenth anniversary as a public association of the Church, following a decree by Demetrio Fernández, current Bishop Emeritus of Córdoba, on May 13, 2016. They accompanied their godmother brotherhood at the outset and are participating in the 2026 pilgrimage alongside them, reinforcing the bonds of shared devotion.

This annual pilgrimage serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring cultural and religious heritage that underpins many aspects of Spanish society, including the communal spirit often seen in football culture.
